30 Book Challenge!
The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”- Dr. Seuss
As part of your child’s Language Arts curriculum this year, your child will be participating in Reading Counts! A plan that encourages reading practice, motivation and empowering students toward greater reading achievement. The students will be aware of setting goals, what is expected of them, and how to persevere and not procrastinate when it comes to their reading goals. Students will be required to read 30 chapter books for the school year (Failure to read is not an option!). Most of the reading will be done in class, however students are expected to be reading at home too. My goal for the program is to have my students not only leave 4th grade with foundational skills for reading and reading strategies, I want my students to LOVE to read!
Here is How the Plan Works:
1. All students will be assessed in reading by using the Interactive test (iReady), which is a computer-adaptive reading comprehension assessment.
2.Upon completion of the test students were given their Independent Reading Level (IRL), which provides an accurate measure of the student’s comprehension and the difficulty of the written text.
3. Students will also take a “Reading Interest Inventory” in order to find out books appeal to their individual needs.
Requirements for Students:
Like most of us, students appreciate having choices, especially when it comes to what they will be reading. I do not find value in assigning books to students to which they have no interest or find no value in reading. The students will have a choice in what they read with some minimal parameters. In an effort to expose students to the variety of literary options students will have genre requirements, but the “choice” as to which book they read in that particular genre is theirs.
30 Book Challenge
Read 10 books each Trimester from the designated genre's. Then, students will complete a Google Slide show for the books they read. This will be started in class and they can work on slides throughout the trimester.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns with regard to how your child is doing in the challenge, please don’t hesitate to contact me throughout the year. Happy Reading!
